In a site visit to Colwick Hill Dr Ian Waites will examine Siberechts’ prospect in its present reality and explore how our understanding of this landscape has come ‘down to earth’ in terms of its modern social (and anti-social) usage.

University of Nottingham Associate Professor in Art History Nicholas Alfrey explores A View of Nottingham from the East by Jan Siberechts. The painting offers a highly detailed account of the town and its relationship to the Trent Valley. We will also consider the painting as one of two intersecting prospects, since there is another view by Siberechts, now in a private collection, showing the same landscape in reverse shot, seen from the vantage point of Clifton Grove.

Taking Jan Siberechts’ c.1690 painting View of Nottingham from the East as a starting point, we will consider the artistic mode of the ‘prospect’ and its intentions and meanings, and of what the painting tells us about Nottingham in the late seventeenth century and beyond.
